Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD recorded its best monthly sales of 2025, selling 377,628 vehicles in June—a 10% year-over-year increase. The surge was fueled by price cuts of up to 34%, a strategy that cleared inventory but eroded margins and triggered a US$20 billion market value drop.
Regulators in China are now cracking down on EV price wars, forcing BYD to scale back discounts. Despite domestic headwinds, the company is gaining traction in Europe, where sales nearly quadrupled in early 2025.
Analysts warn that while demand remains strong, the price-cutting strategy underscores mounting margin pressures in an increasingly competitive market.
